[laughs]\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So obviously with works like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Zen_zRmbKaM\">Italian Spider-Man<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NhHxiAb7g0g\">Danger 5<\/a> &#8211; you&#8217;re speaking my language. Those absurd works of art are just truly divine!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What are some of the learnings you got working on those properties when it comes to Pro Jank Footy?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are there going to be Japanese robots or things like that?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">David Ashby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Danger 5, Italian Spider-Man, and all our projects come from a place where we just want to realize things that we want to see.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And so Pro Jank Footy is an extension of that!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The whole genesis of this project started from a barbecue where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm2085394\/\">Cam Rogers<\/a> challenged us to make a video game, because apparently we&#8217;re funny!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gamers Heroes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ll back you up on that one!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">David Ashby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And he&#8217;s like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere&#8217;s not enough funny video games &#8211; and funny games do well. Why don&#8217;t you try making one?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s something we&#8217;ve eyeballed for a while.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other thing with that is just like coming down to,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlright, well, if I was going to make a video game, what would it be?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why not take Australian rules football, which the whole world knows, and that&#8217;s sort of the genesis of Pro Jank Footy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We made an Aussie rules game that celebrates the fact that nobody knows what Aussie rules is.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gamers Heroes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On that note &#8211; watching the trailer, it&#8217;s just bizarre!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s dad&#8217;s car, there&#8217;s all this crazy stuff.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How do you come up with all these crazy concepts? Are there a lot of barbecues or alcohol involved?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What&#8217;s going on?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">David Ashby&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to the core idea, in Australia everyone knows what Australian-rules football is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, outside the country, people ask \u201cWhat are Australian rules?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And so, what if you took a sport game where the rules change, going on the idea of like,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh, Australian Rules means nonsense.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because if you describe the real game &#8211; and it is a real game; it\u2019s one of the most popular sort of sports in the country!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It does sound bizarre.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like, Aussie Rules is played on a cricket oval. There&#8217;s 18 aside. You kick a ball between two posts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So what if we took that concept and put a mechanic whereby the rules are constantly changed, not just for a tactical or sporting sense, but more leaning to the absurdity of the game itself?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gamers Heroes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I mean, in the Bay Area Pickleball is a big thing! What other arcade games inspired this one?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">David Ashby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, the obvious inspiration was NBA Jam!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There have been Aussie rules footy games made over the years, even as way back as the Commodore 64!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there was never a 16-bit era version of the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why we were like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere&#8217;s an opening there!\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And to finally do that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m 39 &#8211; a lot of kids my generation played Super Nintendo, and we were around for NBA Jam.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in that whole 16-bit era, even like NHL \u201894 was down in Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were Aussie rules though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So we were like, why not? Let&#8217;s make one, but let&#8217;s adopt the two mentalities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One, let&#8217;s use the sensibilities they had back in the day. Let&#8217;s have high punchy art, you know. Let\u2019s really restrict the color palette to the really simplify the sport.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But let\u2019s also bring in some of that SNK, Asian sensibility whereby it&#8217;s really exaggerated, over the top, and just extreme!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We really respond to those games!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gamers Heroes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s the best there is!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then you\u2019ve got NBA Jam &#8211; \u201cBoom Shakalaka!\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And NHL \u201894 &#8211; that\u2019s legit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">David Ashby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yeah!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gamers Heroes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m an \u201887 kid, so I totally get it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">David Ashby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s the thing as well!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Australia, we don&#8217;t have ice hockey.&nbsp;I mean, we do it at an amateur level &#8211; yeah.&nbsp;But even that game was insanely popular back home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, we think if that can work for the Australian audiences, what if it happened in reverse?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We&#8217;re making Australian game for an international audience!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gamers Heroes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So I have to talk about the narration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/brodenkellyismyname\/\">Broden Kelly<\/a> &#8211; that\u2019s just legendary!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What clip are you&#8217;re most proud of? Are there any improv moments where you just ran with it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What was the most silly thing you can think of?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">David Ashby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Broden Kelly is a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@TheAuntyDonnaChannel\">Aunty Donna<\/a>, which is a comedy collective out of Australia!
