Akira Yuki and co. can only seem to count to five these past few decades, but Ryu ga Gotoku Studio and SEGA are providing what amounts to the ultimate glow-up with the release of Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O.

See whether this three-button setup is worth another round on Steam with our Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. review.

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. Review

For those who grew up with TEKKEN’s four-button setup, the three button setup of Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. might seem rudimentary. How much depth can there be in a system with just a block, punch, and kick?

However, looks can be deceiving – Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. packs serious depth in just three buttons.

A number of factors come into play, from spatial awareness to staggers to Offensive Moves.

Players will quickly come to know – and love – that each match in Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. has a flow where every moment counts. On that note, matches move incredibly fast; there’s a reason online matches are best of three!

Do note that cheap button mashing and turtling will get you nowhere; well, except for a ring out or a nice home on the ground. Players can try, but karma will ultimately bite them in the butt.

This same depth applies to Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O.’s roster of playable characters, each packing a specialized fighting style. While we gravitated toward the cocky Lion Rafale and his poke-heavy Northern Praying Mantis (Tourou-ken) style, there’s also Shun Di’s Drunken Kung Fu style (think Jackie Chan’s Drunken Master), Brad Burns’ kick-heavy Muay Thai, and Wolf Hawkfield’s Canadian-flavored Pro Wrestling.

While there are no new characters in this release, Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O.’s cast packs incredible depth just waiting to be mastered.

Those who immersed themselves in the world of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown for PlayStation a few years ago (check out our review here) will see a lot of similarities, but Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. is the definitive release of this time-tested fighter.

For one, this Steam version features rollback netcode – an absolute game-changer. We were able to play 20 matches up to the 3rd Kyu rank with silky-smooth gameplay, with only one match being choppy during the review period. It was also easy to rematch and find an opponent, and little features like the robust training mode players can utilize between matches is a nice touch.

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. also keeps players engaged with a number of modes that’ll help refine one’s fighting style. While there’s a focus on Online Play, there’s also an Arcade mode and a Training Mode with a healthy amount of modifiers. Community plays a major role in Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. – and it delivers; don’t be shy now!

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. is the definitive Virtua Fighter experience, packing serious depth just waiting to be mastered. Fans of SEGA’s time-honored fighting series, rejoice; Virtua Fighter is back.
