While The Campsite’s point-and-click action is short to a fault, this trio of adventurers packs plenty of heart. Those seeking out treasure best seek out this night in the woods.
A mysterious treasure – and adventure – awaits in Guillem Espias’ new point-and-click adventure The Campsite.
Should players venture forth for a night in the woods, or should this title take a hike?
The Campsite Review
Set in the Mediterranean countryside, The Campsite features a trio on a top-secret mission – that’s classified, no less! – to find the titular campsite, set up a tent, make a campfire, and find treasure.
The Campsite features a simple tale, one that channels the wholesome childlike innocence found in classics like The Goonies – but with conversations around the finer points around ravioli and meatballs in lieu of truffle shuffles.
As players get a chance to know the protagonist Marco, his brother Garibaldo, and his cousin Sofia, they’ll be able to explore this woodsy area and its finer points after dark (not like that).
Don’t expect any major danger or twists in The Campfire – just a short tale of three kids that are being kids and the repercussions that follow their childlike behavior.
Throughout The Campsite, players will be tasked with collecting items and achieving objectives. From collecting the tools needed to build a fire, to getting one’s car up and running to get to their next destination, players will have a handful of tasks to overcome in The Campsite as part of this offsite.
In true point-and-click fashion, The Campfire will have players applying the properties of items to things in their inventory and throughout the environment. There’s also the odd Morse code puzzle near the end one will truly need to keep their ear out for if they want to get the job done.
Also in true point-and-click fashion, players will sometimes have to find solutions in an overly obtuse fashion; nothing on the level of, say, Grim Fandango, but still not typically what we would do as our first choice.
It’s just a shame that The Campsite is brief to a fault – we’re talking about an hour to see this adventure to its completion.
There’s a lot of screen transitions that cut through a lot of the happenings with a humorous segue. While we do like its focus on the action, and do recognize this is a short but sweet freebie, a bit more time building the world of this tale would have helped make more of a lasting impression when all is said and done.
Nevertheless, everything from The Campsite’s pixel work to story itself is made with heart – we especially love the attention-to-detail that comes with the detailed pixelated art of the cast when they come in for their extreme close-ups.
