The Alters Choices Guide

Throughout the game, Jan and his Alters will face many decisions, some with drastic consequences. In this guide, we list every choice we found in the game and the outcome of each decision.
Many times, when talking with other characters, you will notice colored bubbles that appear near their head. Red represents an increase in negative emotions, while a green represents a movement towards positive emotions.
Certain emotions happen automatically and cannot be avoided. Below, we list only the emotions directly impacted by the choices made, not those in subsequent conversations.
To find the choice you are currently on, type part of it exactly as shown in the box below. This will bring up related choices. To make things a little easier, we have highlighted the emotional outcomes of each choice with the corresponding color. Green indicates a positive change in emotion, while Red indicates a negative change in emotion. Lastly, some choices will result in Jan learning life Lessons, these will be highlighted in yellow.

Important Choice Details (Spoilers Inside)
Very few singular choices immediately impact the story and the end of the game. Most of them are a series of decisions, depending on who you align with.
Character Storylines & Lessons
Each Alter in the game has their own personal storyline and a Lesson they can teach Jan. This usually means going along with their requests to build certain modules and achieve certain tasks, as well as sometimes collecting their lost cargo on the map. Lessons unlock additional dialog options, and at least two must be unlocked for certain endings.
Tabula Rasa
At one point in the story, you will need to make a decision, during the mission Tabula Rasa. This is the most impactful decision in the game. At one point, some Alters will leave your base, depending on your choice. Some can return. However, if you go with Maxwell, The Technician will leave forever.
Ally Corporation
There are multiple paths to align with the Corporation, most of which center around siding with Agatha and using her suggestions when the time comes.
Maxwell
Maxwell has his own story tied to whether you choose to side with him over the corporation.
Lucas
Lucas can help at several key points throughout the game, but only if you keep building Rapidium Arks at a reasonable pace. You should have all 5 before you leave Act 2. Being on good terms with Lucas also unlocks Jan Refiner’s life lesson and storyline.
Lucas can be involved in multiple endings, if he is on your side. These can both align with either Maxwell or Lena
Lena
Your choices with Lena change her involvement in the story and also what happens to her at the end. There will be several opportunities throughout the game to either work with Lena or cut her off.
At the start of Act 3 Lena is told everything. If you have decided not to tell her about the Alters to this point, you will not have any positive relations going forward.
The Botanist
The Botanist has his own ending if you choose to let him speak with Lena and eventually take Jan’s place going back to Earth
The Scientist
The Scientist also has his own ending. If you make a choice that leaves the rebel base intact (so far, just siding with Maxwell for me) and complete The Scientists story, he will ask to stay on the planet.

I’ll think about it later
Jan says he’ll think about it later. You can make the decision on which route to pick later in the story.
No, We Won’t Fight. We Need To Be Smart About This OR If We Want To Survive, We Have To Be Prepared To Fight
When Jan is discussing the final plan with the Alters on how to get them back to Earth safely
No, we won’t fight. We need to be smart about this
Jan says the group need to be smart and each Alter gives their opinion on what they should do. Jan reminds the group that the rescue team are unaware of their existence, and they can use that to their advantage.
If we want to survive, we have to be prepared to fight
We Could Ambush Them Inside The Base OR We Could Lock Them In
Continuing discussions about the plan to save the Alters
We could ambush them inside the base
We could hide outside and lock them in
Jan mentions locking the rescue team in the ship could be a good idea. The rest of the team, universally, see this as a terrible idea and Jan Scientist suggests blowing up the base instead.
It’s Brutal. But It’s Either Them Or Us OR No. There Has To Be Another Way
Responding to Jan Scientists plans to lock the rescue team inside the base and blow it up
It’s brutal. But it’s either them or us
No. There has to be another way

When Jan Scientist asks Jan if he has thought about his personal safety after the mission is over
I hadn’t thought about that
Don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine
Jan says he’ll be fine and the Alters say they’ve got his back
[Shrewdness] Nope, But I Do Recall Seeing Cockroaches… OR Not That I Know Of… OR A Cat? That’s Impossible
This is during the final events of the game. If you let Jan Botanist go in Jan’s place, this conversation does not take place
[Shrewdness] Nope, but I do recall seeing cockroaches
This brings up a series of choices that follow the same outcome as the conversation two boxes below this one.

[Pragmatism] We can’t afford to waste more time on this
Jan convinces the Rescue Team to ignore the readings and they load the Arks on board the rescue ship. This gives Jan the option to choose how it ends.
I told you, I have nothing to declare
The Rescue Team realize time is short and they decide to get the Arks on board regardless of the readings. The Rescue Team will send an escort back to Jan on their ship. This unlocks the All By Myself achievement for finishing the game and leaving the Alters to the mercy of the corporation.
[Assertiveness] I’ve done my job. Now it’s time to do yours
Jan tells the Rescue Team that he has done his job, they need to get the Rapidium back to safety. This allows Jan to choose the ending based on whether he uses gas or explosives.
Plant The Sleeping Gas On The Ship OR Blow Up The Base OR Do Nothing
There are a large number of variables and choices that impact the consequences of these options. We have a detailed breakdown in our complete guide for The Alters – All Endings Explained, so be sure to check that out.
We’re always open to feedback, but please be gentle on this one. It took me days and wiped me out 😀
Still missing a lot of dialogues but still pretty useful, thanks!
Yeah, sorry. I went through the entire game twice and then halfway through a 3rd time, grabbed as many as I could. Hopefully there’s enough to give people the information to avoid the more negative paths.
you’re missing the entire Jan Shrink section
I’m hoping to go back and finish it at some point. Was the only Jan I didn’t get to in both previews.
Unfortunately, due to Googles destruction of websites like ours, it’s a complete gamble on whether or not our guides get traffic anymore.
Means a lot of my time has to be dedicated elsewhere if Google buries a guide.
This is by FAR the best guide I’ve ever seen! Love the search feature and how everything is on one page. Great job! And thanks a lot! This gives me way less anxiety and lowers my stress and frustration
Thanks Bryson, really appreciate that. So glad it’s helping 😁
Less insecurity less anxiety is what the doctor gets if you select.
Death is something we’re trying to avoid
Thanks Skiro, updated
